¡Quítate de delante de mí, Satanás! – Parte II

“Desde entonces comenzó Jesús a declarar a sus discípulos que le era necesario ir a Jerusalén y padecer mucho de los ancianos, de los principales sacerdotes y de los escribas; y ser muerto, y resucitar al tercer día. Entonces Pedro, tomándolo aparte, comenzó a reconvenirle, diciendo: Señor, ten compasión de ti; en ninguna manera esto te acontezca. Pero él, volviéndose, dijo a Pedro: ¡Quítate de delante de mí, Satanás!; me eres tropiezo, porque no pones la mira en las cosas de Dios, sino en las de los hombres”. (Mat 16:21-23)

En la primera parte estuvimos hablando de lo que pasa cuando nos dejamos engañar y usar por el enemigo y lo que nos recomienda la Palabra de Dios para no ser piedra de tropiezo a nosotros mismos y a quienes nos rodean. En esta segunda parte me gustaría indagar más acerca de nuestro enemigo como parte de la estrategia para derrotarlo, dejando claro que quien merece principal atención es nuestro único y adorado Dios.

1) ¿Quién es satanás?

Creo importante comenzar con la Palabra de Dios que dice: “Porque en él fueron creadas todas las cosas, las que hay en los cielos y las que hay en la tierra, visibles e invisibles; sean tronos, sean dominios, sean principados, sean potestades; todo fue creado por medio de él y para él” (Col 1:16).

Dios creó absolutamente todo perfecto, pero lamentablemente ese estado de perfección inicial algunas veces no permanece, y así como sucedió con Adán y Eva vemos que, tiempo antes, sucedió con satanás.

“Perfecto eras en todos tus caminos desde el día en que fuiste creado hasta que se halló en ti maldad” (Ezequiel 28:15).

En ese mismo capítulo del libro de Ezequiel (v.13-17) vemos que originalmente satanás era un ángel poseedor de una hermosura y sabiduría que solo Dios era y es capaz de crear, esto lo ensoberbeció de tal manera que llegó a querer ser como Dios, por lo cual fue echado de los cielos junto con aquellos ángeles que estaban con él. Y si hay algo de lo cual podemos estar seguros es que aprendió muy bien esa lección, ya que este fue el mismo pretexto con el que luego engañó a Eva.

Satanás significa “adversario” u “oponente” Jn 13:27. También se le asignan otros nombres en la Biblia, como lo son: abadón, apolión (destrucción): Apo 9:11; acusador: Apo 12:10; adversario: 1Pe 5:8; ángel de luz: 2Cor 11:4; belcebú: Mat 12:24; Luc 11:15; belial: 2Cor 6:15; engañador: Apo 12:9; 20:3; diablo: (calumniador): 1Pe 5:8; dragón: Apo 12:3; enemigo: Mat13:39; maligno: 1Jn 5:19; dios de este mundo: 2Cor 4:4; mentiroso, padre de mentiras: Jn 8:44; príncipe de los demonios: Mat 12:24; príncipe de este mundo: Jn 12:31; serpiente: Gen 3; tentador: Mat 4:3; león rugiente: 1 Pe 5:8; gobernante de las tinieblas: Efe 6:12; espíritu que obra en los hijos de la desobediencia: Efe 2:2.

Algunas características de satanás y sus demonios:

1- Los demonios no son omnipresentes. Solo pueden estar en un lugar a la vez a diferencia de Dios que está en todas partes al mismo tiempo. (Mt 8:28-34).

2- Los demonios no son omniscientes. Poseen una inteligencia muy aguda (Mc 1:24; Hec 19:15-16); pero jamás podrán compararse con la omnisciencia de Dios.

3- Los demonios no son omnipotentes, su poder ha sido limitado por Dios (Mc 9:22-27). Nunca superará la omnipotencia del Señor (Jn 10:21).

2) Su estrategia:

Definitivamente lo que el padre de las mentiras busca es apartarnos de la voluntad de Dios y someternos a la suya, ya que lo que él desea es tomar su lugar y ser él el motivo de nuestra adoración. Para lograr esto no lo hace vestido de rojo y con un tridente en la mano, todo lo contrario, siempre tratará de tergiversar la realidad invadiendo nuestros pensamientos de una manera casi irresistible, mostrándonos lo malo como bueno, lo injusto como justo y lo indecente como honroso, básicamente, nos incita a ir en contra de los preceptos de Dios, a desobedecerle, despojándonos así de su bendición y protección.

Su ataque va dirigido a aquellos que representan un peligro en sus planes, aquellos que ejercen influencia sobre otros, no solo dentro de la iglesia sino fuera de ella. Su atención se concentra en aquellos líderes (actuales ó futuros) a todos los niveles de nuestra sociedad. ¿Por qué esto? simplemente porque hasta satanás tiene el conocimiento que si tienes de tu lado al líder también tendrás a quienes lo siguen. El pecado del rey David trajo juicio sobre toda la nación bajo su cargo (2Sam 24). Asimismo, conoce muy bien la Palabra en Zac 13:7b que dice "hiere al Pastor y se dispersarán las ovejas”, y de seguro también le ha dado una ojeada a los libros de liderazgo de John Maxwell referente a que si conquistas a un seguidor añadirás uno, pero si conquistas a un líder te multiplicarás.

En el libro “Desenmascarando al Espíritu de Jezabel”, John Paul Jackson da claros ejemplos de cómo el adversario se introduce en la casa de Dios para desintegrar el liderazgo y de esa forma dispersar a sus miembros.

3) Cómo desarmar a nuestro adversario:

3.1.- Declara el poder de la sangre de Cristo: esta es nuestra principal y más poderosa arma junto con la Palabra de Dios que nos confirma su victoria sobre el enemigo, aunado a la confesión y el testimonio.

“Y ellos le han vencido por medio de la sangre del Cordero y de la palabra del testimonio de ellos, y menospreciaron sus vidas hasta la muerte” (Apo12:11)

3.2.- Confiesa tus faltas: a fin de que el acusador no se adelante a avergonzarnos públicamente.

“Si confesamos nuestros pecados, él es fiel y justo para perdonar nuestros pecados, y limpiarnos de toda maldad.” (1Jn 1:9 / Mt 5:25)

3.3.- Escudriña la Palabra de Dios: lamentablemente el enemigo la conoce mejor que muchos de nosotros, por eso sabe como atacarnos, pero huye de aquellos que la conocen y la aplican.

“Entonces Jesús le dijo: Vete, Satanás, porque escrito está: Al Señor tu Dios adorarás, y a él sólo servirás. El diablo entonces le dejó; y he aquí vinieron ángeles y le servían”. (Mt 3:10-11)

3.4.- Anhela la presencia del Espíritu Santo: Él nos da discernimiento y nos guía en todo.

“Mas el Consolador, el Espíritu Santo, a quien el Padre enviará en mi nombre, él os enseñará todas las cosas, y os recordará todo lo que yo os he dicho” Jn 14:26

3.5.- Ora y permanece alerta en todo tiempo: descuidos abren puertas difíciles de cerrar.

“Velad y orad, para que no entréis en tentación; el espíritu a la verdad está dispuesto, pero la carne es débil”. (Mt 26:41)

3.6.- Nuestro corazón, fuente de vida: cuida celosamente que los deseos de tu corazón vayan paralelos a los deseos de nuestro Padre celestial.

“Sobre toda cosa guardada, guarda tu corazón; porque de él mana la vida” (Prov 4:23)

3.7.- Renueva tus pensamientos: no des cabida al enemigo a través de tu mente.

“Por lo demás, hermanos, todo lo que es verdadero, todo lo honesto, todo lo justo, todo lo puro, todo lo amable, todo lo que es de buen nombre; si hay virtud alguna, si algo digno de alabanza, en esto pensad” Fil 4:8

Dios está buscando gente que crea en Él, que esté dispuesta a dejarse moldear y desee formar parte de su familia, gente valiente y esforzada que no retroceda durante la primera batalla sino que permanezca hasta ganar la guerra, y para aquellos fieles Él les da está promesa:

“El que venciere heredará todas las cosas, y yo seré su Dios, y él será mi hijo” Apo 21:7

¡Quítate de delante de mí, Satanás! – Parte I

Pero él, volviéndose, dijo a Pedro: ¡Quítate de delante de mí, Satanás!; me eres tropiezo, porque no pones la mira en las cosas de Dios, sino en las de los hombres”. (Mat 16:21-23)

La primera vez que leí este pasaje lo primero que cruzó por mi mente fue “Señor, que duras palabras! pobre Pedro!”. Luego entendí que actitudes extremas ameritan correcciones extremas. Pedro, quien acababa de ser honrado nada más y nada menos que con las llaves de los cielos, ahora estaba siendo usado por el enemigo para persuadir a Jesús de no completar el propósito por el cual estaba en medio nuestro.

Esta situación trajo algunas interrogantes a mi mente:

¿En qué momento pasamos de ser Hijos de Dios para ser llamados Satanás?
¿Durante cuánto tiempo y con qué frecuencia adquirimos ese apodo?
¿Cuándo tomamos el lugar del enemigo?

Lo tomamos cuando:

1) Nos dejamos engañar (temor, dudas, frustración, rebelión, orgullo, auto-compasión, auto-suficiencia, etc.)

“Entonces Jehová Dios dijo a la mujer: ¿Qué es lo que has hecho? Y dijo la mujer: La serpiente me engañó, y comí” (Gen 1:13)

“porque el pecado, tomando ocasión por el mandamiento, me engañó, y por él me mató”. (Rom 7:11)

2) Nos dejamos usar (incitando a otros a seguirnos en desobediencia, rebelión, inmoralidad sexual, traición, murmuración, etc.)

“Y entró Satanás en Judas, por sobrenombre Iscariote, el cual era uno del número de los doce;” (Luc 22:3)

“Pero Satanás se levantó contra Israel, e incitó a David a que hiciese censo de Israel” (1Cro 21:1)

“Y dijo Pedro: Ananías, ¿por qué llenó Satanás tu corazón para que mintieses al Espíritu Santo, y sustrajeses del precio de la heredad?” Hec 5:3

Nuestra tendencia natural es asignarle toda la culpa de nuestras malas acciones al enemigo, a aquel llamado satanás, diablo, serpiente, padre de mentiras, acusador, entre otros nombres que se mencionan en la Biblia (en la parte II estaremos ahondando más sobre este tema), pero lo cierto es que el enemigo no entra si nosotros mismos no colocamos nuestras hermosas e inocentes manos en la perilla de la puerta y le damos vuelta. En el libro “Sé libre” Mary Jo Clouse dice: “Es importante comprender que los demonios no pueden entrar a voluntad; deben tener un derecho legal o una puerta de oportunidad”.

Cuando Jesús le dice a Pedro “Satanás” se refería a dos cosas:

1) Estaba reprendiendo al enemigo, quien obviamente estaba seduciendo a Pedro en ese momento.

2) Estaba advirtiéndole a Pedro del peligro en el que se encontraba de ser no solo engañado sino usado por el adversario. Un llamado de atención a velar.

Lo segundo que el Señor Jesús le dice a Pedro, luego de reprenderlo, es: “porque me eres tropiezo”. Cuando somos engañados y usados por el padre de las mentiras lamentablemente nos convertimos en piedra de tropiezo para nosotros mismos y para las personas que están a nuestro alrededor. Veamos lo que dice la Biblia a este respecto:

“Dijo Jesús a sus discípulos: Imposible es que no vengan tropiezos; mas ¡ay de aquel por quien vienen! Mejor le fuera que se le atase al cuello una piedra de molino y se le arrojase al mar, que hacer tropezar a uno de estos pequeñitos”. (Lc 17:1)


Qué nos recomienda la Palabra de Dios:

1) Toma la decisión de ser de bendición:
“Así que, ya no nos juzguemos más los unos a los otros, sino más bien decidid no poner tropiezo u ocasión de caer al hermano”. (Rom 14:13)

2) Apártate de aquel que no acepta corrección:
“Mas os ruego, hermanos, que os fijéis en los que causan divisiones y tropiezos en contra de la doctrina que vosotros habéis aprendido, y que os apartéis de ellos” (Rom 16:17)

3) Pide al Señor discernimiento para edificación de los que te rodean:
“Por lo cual, si la comida le es a mi hermano ocasión de caer, no comeré carne jamás, para no poner tropiezo a mi hermano” (1Cor 8:13)

4) Valora tu ministerio:
“No damos a nadie ninguna ocasión de tropiezo, para que nuestro ministerio no sea vituperado” (2Cor 6:3)

5) Mantente en la presencia de Dios y ama a tu prójimo como a ti mismo:
“El que ama a su hermano, permanece en la luz, y en él no hay tropiezo”. (1Jn 2:10)

Quiero concluir dejándote una palabra de ánimo, porque el Señor también dice en su Palabra que si tropezamos Él nos levantará y no solo eso sino que, si permanecemos en Él, Él hará tropezar a nuestros enemigos:

“Jehová es mi luz y mi salvación; ¿de quién temeré? Jehová es la fortaleza de mi vida; ¿de quién he de atemorizarme? cuando se juntaron contra mí los malignos, mis angustiadores y mis enemigos, para comer mis carnes, ellos tropezaron y cayeron”. (Sal 27:1-2)

¿ESTOY YO PREPARADO PARA SER BENDECIDO?

Rey Uzías (2Crónicas 26:4-5)

“Uzías hizo lo recto ante los ojos de Jehová, conforme a todas las cosas que había hecho Amasías, su padre. Y persistió en buscar a Dios en los días de Zacarías, entendido en visiones de Dios; y en estos días en que buscó a Jehová, él le prosperó”.


El rey Uzías gobernó Judá durante 52 años. Fue un gran rey a quién Dios bendijo permitiéndole no solo reinar por tanto tiempo, sino también obtener gran fama por restaurar la prosperidad de su pueblo, formando un ejercito victorioso y promoviendo la agricultura. El problema con Uzías fue, básicamente, que llegó un momento en el que el poder recibido por Dios lo envolvió de tal manera que lo hizo apartarse de Él.

Imagínate que Dios concede todas tus peticiones referentes a la prosperidad, visualízate con invaluables posesiones, dinero, poder, fama internacional y el respeto y admiración de todos los que te rodean… ¿Y ahora que? ¿Cuáles serán los lineamientos a seguir? ¿Qué harás con todo ese dinero, poder y fama? Porque si estás orando por prosperidad quiere decir que ya tienes un plan a desarrollar con todas esas bendiciones por venir y, aún más, ya tienes estrategias trazadas a fin de evitar que esas bendiciones se conviertan en maldiciones para tu vida.

Es por eso que te invito a meditar en lo siguiente:

1) Visualiza lo que quieres:

Mírate a ti mismo en la posición que has anhelado durante años, con toda la amplitud que tu imaginación sea capaz, como dicen algunos “con todos los juguetes”. Visualiza ese momento que has estado esperando con ansias, el tiempo de la recompensa, ese gran día en el que el Señor te dice: “Aquí está tu bendición, por tu fidelidad te la has ganado”.

Mt 25:23 "Su señor le dijo: Bien, buen siervo y fiel; sobre poco has sido fiel, sobre mucho te pondré; entra en el gozo de tu señor".

2) Visualiza lo que Dios quiere:

Ahora imagina al Señor dirigiéndose a ti y dándote instrucciones precisas acerca de todo eso que ha puesto en tus manos. ¿Qué te dice? ¿Qué espera de ti? ¿Cuál es su visión? ¿Concuerda con la tuya? ? ¿Qué quiere el Señor?

2.1.) Él quiere que le honremos:

Exo 9: 16 "Y a la verdad yo te he puesto para mostrar en ti mi poder, y para que mi nombre sea anunciado en toda la tierra".

2.2.) Él quiere que le seamos fieles:

Deu 8: 18-19 "Sino acuérdate de Jehová tu Dios, porque él te da el poder para hacer las riquezas, a fin de confirmar su pacto que juró a tus padres, como en este día. Mas si llegares a olvidarte de Jehová tu Dios y anduvieres en pos de dioses ajenos, y les sirvieres y a ellos te inclinares, yo lo afirmo hoy contra vosotros, que de cierto pereceréis".

2.3.) Él quiere que hagamos el bien:

Prov 3:27-28 "No te niegues a hacer el bien a quien es debido, cuando tuvieres poder para hacerlo. No digas a tu prójimo: anda, y vuelve, y mañana te daré, cuando tienes contigo qué darle".

Prov 21:13 "El que cierra su oído al clamor del pobre, también él clamará, y no será oído".


3) Visualiza lo que harás

A este punto ya sabes lo que quieres obtener y sabes lo que Dios quiere que hagas con eso que te dará, así que ahora solo queda ser esforzado y valiente e ir por esas bendiciones colocando al Espíritu del Señor al mando. Él bendecirá a aquellos capaces de bendecir a otros, ayudará a aquellos dispuestos de corazón a ayudar a otros. El plan de Dios es que el amor que Él nos da pueda fluir a través de nosotros, que otros crean en Él por nuestro testimonio.

Deu 15: 7 "Cuando haya en medio de ti menesteroso de alguno de tus hermanos en alguna de tus ciudades, en la tierra que Jehová tu Dios te da, no endurecerás tu corazón, ni cerrarás tu mano contra tu hermano pobre, 8sino abrirás a él tu mano liberalmente, y en efecto le prestarás lo que necesite. 9Guárdate de tener en tu corazón pensamiento perverso, diciendo: Cerca está el año séptimo, el de la remisión, y mires con malos ojos a tu hermano menesteroso para no darle; porque él podrá clamar contra ti a Jehová, y se te contará por pecado. 10Sin falta le darás, y no serás de mezquino corazón cuando le des; porque por ello te bendecirá Jehová tu Dios en todos tus hechos, y en todo lo que emprendas. 11Porque no faltarán menesterosos en medio de la tierra;b por eso yo te mando, diciendo: Abrirás tu mano a tu hermano, al pobre y al menesteroso en tu tierra.

Gal 2:10 "Solamente nos pidieron que nos acordásemos de los pobres; lo cual también procuré con diligencia hacer".


Finalmente, creo que es sumamente importante concluir diciendo:

1Cor 13: 3 "Y si repartiese todos mis bienes para dar de comer a los pobres, y si entregase mi cuerpo para ser quemado, y no tengo amor, de nada me sirve”.

Y que Dios te bendiga hasta que sobreabunde!

GIVE THANKS...!!!

“Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus, to all the saints in Christ Jesus at Philippi, together with the overseers and deacons: I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus. God can testify how I long for all of you with the affection of Christ Jesus. And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless until the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ — to the glory and praise of God”. Phil 1:1-11

The beginning of this letter from Paul to the church of Philippi shows a remarkable side of Paul’s character: GRATITUDE. Even though he had a very traumatic life since he became a Christian he never failed to give thanks for everything and to everyone he was related with.

Academic studies have shown that grateful people are more optimistic, suffer less stress and, consequently, achieve better physical health and are more spiritually aware of the environment they are living in. Gratitude gives you a positive outlook of life.

Being grateful costs little but gives a wonderful boast. Here you have some suggestions:

1) Start thanking God and take some time during the day to think about what and who you are grateful for. Not only the good things but for the bad ones as well. We should look at them as challenges and opportunities to grow. It does not mean you have to pretend to be happy whilst going through difficult circumstances, it means to believe that God is always on our side (Jesus at Gethsemane is the best example of it).

2) Say “thank you” to those who have done something for you. If you feel shy to tell them face to face, find another way: send a card (Christmas time is just perfect for that); phone calls, text messages, emails, etc.

After sharing this, and not knowing whether I will come back from Venezuela or not next month, I would really like to put this teaching into practice. Firstly, I thank God for his faithfulness and care. Secondly, to the church, all of you who have been supporting me for the last few years. And finally, special thanks to Victoria Bastidas, who has been a pastor, friend and sister to so many people for long time, example of dedication, patience and humbleness, and Gerald MyHill for his academic support and advice that has made such a huge difference in these articles. DA GRACIAS EN TODO TIEMPO

"Pablo y Timoteo, siervos de Jesucristo, a todos los santos en Cristo Jesús que están en Filipos, con los obispos y diáconos: Gracia y paz a vosotros, de Dios nuestro Padre y del Señor Jesucristo. Doy gracias a mi Dios siempre que me acuerdo de vosotros, siempre en todas mis oraciones rogando con gozo por todos vosotros, por vuestra comunión en el evangelio, desde el primer día hasta ahora; estando persuadido de esto, que el que comenzó en vosotros la buena obra, la perfeccionará hasta el día de Jesucristo; como me es justo sentir esto de todos vosotros, por cuanto os tengo en el corazón; y en mis prisiones, y en la defensa y confirmación del evangelio, todos vosotros sois participantes conmigo de la gracia. Porque Dios me es testigo de cómo os amo a todos vosotros con el entrañable amor de Jesucristo. Y esto pido en oración, que vuestro amor abunde aun más y más en ciencia y en todo conocimiento, para que aprobéis lo mejor, a fin de que seáis sinceros e irreprensibles para el día de Cristo, llenos de frutos de justicia que son por medio de Jesucristo, para gloria y alabanza de Dios". (Fil 1:1-11)



El comienzo de esta carta de Pablo a los Filipenses muestra una parte del carácter de Pablo realmente admirable: GRATITUD. A pesar de que tuvo una vida bastante traumática desde que se convirtió al Cristianismo, él nunca dejó de dar gracias por todo y a todos con los que tuvo la oportunidad de compartir. Estudios académicos han demostrado que las personas agradecidas son más optimistas, sufren menos estrés y, en consecuencia, lograr mejor salud física y son más conscientes del ambiente espiritual que les rodea. Ser agradecidos nos da una perspectiva positiva de la vida.

Ser agradecidos cuesta poco, pero da un maravilloso impulso para continuar con nuestra labor. Aquí tienes algunas sugerencias:

1) Comienza dando gracias a Dios y toma algún tiempo durante el día para pensar en qué y por quiénes estas agradecido. No sólo por las cosas buenas, sino también por aquellas que no han resultado como esperabas, es necesario considerarlas como retos y oportunidades para crecer. Esto no significa que debes pretender ser felices mientras atravesamos por circunstancias difíciles, sino creer que Dios siempre está de nuestro lado (Jesús en Getsemaní es el mejor ejemplo de ello).

2) Da gracias a quienes han hecho algo por ti. Si no te atreves a decirles “gracias” directamente ó están lejos encuentra otra manera: envíales una tarjeta; una llamada telefónica, un correo electrónico, etc.

Después de compartir esto, realmente me gustaría poner esta enseñanza en práctica. En primer lugar, doy gracias a Dios por su fidelidad y protección. En segundo lugar, a mi familia y a la Iglesia, todos los que me han apoyado durante estos años.

¿Era realmente para Mí tu ayuno?

“Aconteció que en el año cuarto del rey Darío vino palabra de Jehová a Zacarías, a los cuatro días del mes noveno, que es Quisleu, cuando el pueblo de Bet-el había enviado a Sarezer, con Regem-melec y sus hombres, a implorar el favor de Jehová, y a hablar a los sacerdotes que estaban en la casa de Jehová de los ejércitos, y a los profetas, diciendo: ¿Lloraremos en el mes quinto? ¿Haremos abstinencia como hemos hecho ya algunos años? Vino, pues, a mí palabra de Jehová de los ejércitos, diciendo: Habla a todo el pueblo del país, y a los sacerdotes, diciendo: Cuando ayunasteis y llorasteis en el quinto y en el séptimo mes estos setenta años, ¿habéis ayunado para mí? Y cuando coméis y bebéis, ¿no coméis y bebéis para vosotros mismos? ¿No son estas las palabras que proclamó Jehová por medio de los profetas primeros, cuando Jerusalén estaba habitada y tranquila, y sus ciudades en sus alrededores y el Neguev y la Sefela estaban también habitados? Y vino palabra de Jehová a Zacarías, diciendo: Así habló Jehová de los ejércitos, diciendo: Juzgad conforme a la verdad, y haced misericordia y piedad cada cual con su hermano; no oprimáis a la viuda, al huérfano, al extranjero ni al pobre; ni ninguno piense mal en su corazón contra su hermano. Pero no quisieron escuchar, antes volvieron la espalda, y taparon sus oídos para no oír; y pusieron su corazón como diamante, para no oír la ley ni las palabras que Jehová de los ejércitos enviaba por su Espíritu, por medio de los profetas primeros; vino, por tanto, gran enojo de parte de Jehová de los ejércitos”.
Zacarías 7:1-12

Zacarías, como Jeremías y Ezequiel, era un profeta y sacerdote. Comenzó a predicar en el octavo mes del 520 A.C. entre los judíos que habían vuelto del cautiverio en Babilonia. Esta vez Dios les llama la atención acerca de la clase de ayuno que habían estado haciendo durante los últimos 70 años, el cual se había convertido en una tradición ceremonial en lugar de un acto sincero de adoración que debía conducir a la búsqueda de su presencia y a la renovación de corazón y pensamiento.

Una exhortación bastante similar fue dada por el profeta Isaías alrededor de 200 años antes (Isa 58) y otra dada por el mismo Jesús cuando confrontó a los Fariseos por su comportamiento hipócrita durante el ayuno (Mt 6:16).

El ayuno no es un simple ritual hecho por imposición durante un lapso de horas o días, por el contrario, representa un profundo deseo de adorar a Dios y buscar de su presencia.

Estoy absolutamente convencida que el ayuno y la oración en grupos es una herramienta de gran alcance la cuál el Señor ha puesto en nuestras manos. Por esta razón quisiera concluir con lo siguiente:

La razón principal del ayuno es buscar la presencia del Dios, sus bendiciones vendrán seguidamente, tal y como él lo ha prometido (Zec 8).

Así pues, el ayuno que he elegido es:
- Una ofrenda para el Señor que no debilita mi cuerpo, mas fortalece mi alma y espíritu.
- Una adoración sincera que no pesa, mas me libera de cualquier carga.
- Un ayuno que me humilla delante de Él y complementa mis buenas obras hacia el prójimo.
- Una decisión que trae a mi vida gozo y alegría.

Ésa es la clase de ayuno que yo elegí.

“Así ha dicho Jehová de los ejércitos: El ayuno del cuarto mes, el ayuno del quinto, el ayuno del séptimo, y el ayuno del décimo, se convertirán para la casa de Judá en gozo y alegría, y en festivas solemnidades. Amad, pues, la verdad y la paz.” Zac 8:19


Dios te bendiga

WAS IT REALLY FOR ME THAT YOU FASTED?

“The people of Bethel had sent Sharezer and Regem-melech, together with their men, to entreat the LORD by asking the priests of the house of the LORD Almighty and the prophets, "Should I mourn and fast in the fifth month, as I have done for so many years?" Then the word of the LORD Almighty came to me: "Ask all the people of the land and the priests, 'When you fasted and mourned for the past seventy years, was it really for me that you fasted? And when you were eating and drinking, were you not just feasting for yourselves? And the word of the LORD came again to Zechariah: "This is what the LORD Almighty says: 'Administer true justice; show mercy and compassion to one another. "But they refused to pay attention; stubbornly they turned their backs and stopped up their ears. They made their hearts as hard as flint and would not listen to the law or to the words that the LORD Almighty had sent by his Spirit through the earlier prophets. So the LORD Almighty was very angry. "'When I called, they did not listen; so when they called, I would not listen,' says the LORD Almighty.
Zechariah 7


Zechariah, like Jeremiah and Ezequiel, was both a prophet and a priest. His preaching began in the eighth month of the 520 BC among the Jews who had returned from captivity in Babylon. This time God rebukes them about the kind of fasting they had been doing for the last 70 years which had become a ceremonial tradition instead of a sincere act of adoration, seeking His presence and leading to a renewal of heart and mind.

A quite similar exhortation was given by the prophet Isaiah about 200 years earlier (Isa 58) and another one by Jesus himself when he rebuked the Pharisees for hypocritical behaviour in fasting (Mt 6:16).

Fasting in not a mere ritual done by imposition that lasts a few hours or days, but a wholehearted desire to worship God and seek His presence.

I am absolutely convinced that fasting and prayer in groups is a powerful tool which the Lord has been calling our attention to especially during the last few months, not only here but across other countries too. That is why I would like to conclude with the following:

The main reason for fasting is to seek God's presence, his blessings will follow just as He has promised (Zec 8).

So, the fast I have chosen is an offering to the Lord that does not weaken my body, but it strengthens my soul and spirit; pure worship that does not weigh, but frees me from my burden. A fast that humbles me before Him and complements good works towards my neighbours. That is the kind of fast I have chosen.

“This is what the LORD Almighty says: "The fasts of the fourth, fifth, seventh and tenth months will become joyful and glad occasions and happy festivals for Judah. Therefore love truth and peace." Ze 8:19

TIME: friend or foe?

“And Abram said, "You have given me no children; so a servant in my household will be my heir”. Then the word of the LORD came to him: "This man will not be your heir, but a son coming from your own body will be your heir”. Abram believed the LORD, and he credited it to him as righteousness. Now Sarai, Abram's wife, had borne him no children. But she had an Egyptian maidservant named Hagar; so she said to Abram, "The LORD has kept me from having children. Go, sleep with my maidservant; perhaps I can build a family through her." Abram agreed to what Sarai said. So after Abram had been living in Canaan ten years, Sarai his wife took her Egyptian maidservant Hagar and gave her to her husband to be his wife. He slept with Hagar, and she conceived. When she knew she was pregnant, she began to despise her mistress. Then Sarai said to Abram, "You are responsible for the wrong I am suffering. I put my servant in your arms, and now that she knows she is pregnant, she despises me. May the LORD judge between you and me." "Your servant is in your hands," Abram said. "Do with her whatever you think best." Then Sarai ill-treated Hagar; so she fled from her. Gen 15:3-6; 16:1-6

Watching the film about Abraham's life and how Ishmael was born made me reflect on how many "Ishmaels" I have had in my life... How many Ishmael's have I given birth to while waiting on God? How many times have I made a decision to get God's promises at MY right time? How many times have I tried to step forward into a battle ill-equipped? and how many times have I trusted more in people and/or circumstances than in the Lord's faithfulness?

Sad, when you think that you could have done it better.
Encouraging, when you realize how much you have learnt from it and also can help others. Challenging, when before you there is a future to be built and it only depends on you and your relationship with God.

In some cases "time" is a great healer, in others it is the worst enemy our faith can fight against. It is part of our nature to be impatient and we have the common habit of trying to fulfil God's vision by our own methods.

Why is it that time seems to fly when we are on holiday but when we are trapped in a traffic jam already late to catch a flight then minutes give the impression of being hours?

A day still has 24 hours and an hour, 60 minutes. Time does not change, we do.

We can both wait for the Lord's promises and, in the meantime, prepare ourselves to receive them. What kind of father gives a car to his son knowing that he needs driving lessons first?

By no means waiting on the Lord is an easy matter, on the contrary, it is:

- A test of love:
“Keep yourselves in God's love as you wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to bring you to eternal life” Jude 21.

- A test of faith; a period where beliefs are strengthened or weakened.
“For in this hope we were saved. But hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what he already has? But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently” Rom8:24-25

- A test of patience; practicing the fruits of the Spirit
“Be patient, then, brothers, until the Lord's coming. See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop and how patient he is for the autumn and spring rains” James 5:7.

- A test of wisdom; expecting to take the right steps at the right time.
“Yes, LORD, walking in the way of your laws, we wait for you; your name and renown are the desire of our hearts” Isa 26:8.

- A test of courage; risking what we see to obtain what we have not see.
“Be still before the LORD and wait patiently for him; do not fret when men succeed in their ways, when they carry out their wicked schemes”. Ps 37:7
“Wait for the LORD; be strong and take heart and wait for the LORD” Ps 27:14


”Yet the LORD longs to be gracious to you; he rises to show you compassion. For the LORD is a God of justice. Blessed are all who wait for him!” Isa 30:18

"TIEMPO": Amigo ó Enemigo

"Dijo también Abram: Mira que no me has dado prole, y he aquí que será mi heredero un esclavo nacido en mi casa. Luego vino a él palabra de Jehová, diciendo: No te heredará éste, sino un hijo tuyo será el que te heredará. Y lo llevó fuera, y le dijo: Mira ahora los cielos, y cuenta las estrellas, si las puedes contar. Y le dijo: Así será tu descendencia. Y creyó a Jehová, y le fue contado por justicia.

Sarai mujer de Abram no le daba hijos; y ella tenía una sierva egipcia, que se llamaba Agar. Dijo entonces Sarai a Abram: Ya ves que Jehová me ha hecho estéril; te ruego, pues, que te llegues a mi sierva; quizá tendré hijos de ella. Y atendió Abram al ruego de Sarai".

(Gen 15:3-6 / 16:1-2)

Viendo la película sobre la vida de Abraham y cómo nació Ismael trajo algunas preguntas a mi mente:

¿Cuántos "Ismaeles" he tenido en mi vida?
¿A cuántos Ismaeles les he dado vida mientras esperaba en Dios?
¿Cuántas veces tomé una mala decisión para obtener las promesas de Dios en el momento que yo consideré correcto?
¿y cuántas veces he confiado más en personas o circunstancias que en la fidelidad del Señor?

En algunos casos el tiempo es una gran ayuda, en otros es el peor enemigo que nuestra fe pueda enfrentar. Es parte de nuestra naturaleza ser impacientes y tenemos la costumbre de intentar cumplir la visión de Dios empleando nuestros propios métodos.

¿Por qué el tiempo parece volar cuando estamos de vacaciones pero cuando estamos atrapados en el tráfico a punto de llegar tarde a algún sitio nos da la impresión de que transcurren horas en vez de minutos? Quiero decirte que el tiempo es el mismo, el día aún tiene 24 horas, y una hora 60 minutos. El tiempo no cambia, lo hacemos nosotros.

Podemos hacer ambas cosas, esperar en el Señor por sus promesas y, entretanto, prepararnos para recibirlas. ¿Qué clase de padre da un carro a su hijo sabiendo que necesita primero clases de manejo?

De ninguna manera esperar en el Señor es un asunto fácil, por el contrario, es:

1) Una prueba del amor: correspondiendo al sacrificio que por amor hizo Jesús por nosotros.

"conservaos en el amor de Dios, esperando la misericordia de nuestro Señor Jesucristo para vida eterna" Judas 1:21.

2) Una prueba de fe: un período en donde nuestras creencias se fortalecen ó debilitan.

"Porque en esperanza fuimos salvos; pero la esperanza que se ve, no es esperanza; porque lo que alguno ve, ¿a qué esperarlo? Pero si esperamos lo que no vemos, con paciencia lo aguardamos”. Rom 8:24 - 25

3) Una prueba de paciencia: recordando que la paciencia es uno de los frutos del Espíritu.

"Por tanto, hermanos, tened paciencia hasta la venida del Señor. Mirad cómo el labrador espera el precioso fruto de la tierra, aguardando con paciencia hasta que reciba la lluvia temprana y la tardía". Sant 5: 7.

4) Una prueba de sabiduría: esperando para dar los pasos adecuados en el momento oportuno.

"También en el camino de tus juicios, OH Jehová, te hemos esperado; tu nombre y tu memoria son el deseo de nuestra alma" Isa 26:8

5) Una prueba de coraje: arriesgar lo que vemos para obtener lo que no hemos visto aún.

"Hubiera yo desmayado, si no creyese que veré la bondad de Jehová en la tierra de los vivientes. Aguarda a Jehová; esfuérzate, y aliéntese tu corazón; sí, espera a Jehová". Sal 27:13-14

6) Una prueba de compromiso: no es suficiente con esperar en ÉL, debemos demostrar que realmente hemos sido transformados y vivir ese cambio día a día.

“Pero nosotros esperamos, según sus promesas, cielos nuevos y tierra nueva, en los cuales mora la justicia. Por lo cual, oh amados, estando en espera de estas cosas, procurad con diligencia ser hallados por él sin mancha e irreprensibles, en paz”. 2Pe 3:13-14

Dios te bendiga!

UNA VIDA MARAVILLOSA

“Justificados, pues, por la fe, tenemos paz para con Dios por medio de nuestro Señor Jesucristo; por quien también tenemos entrada por la fe a esta gracia en la cual estamos firmes, y nos gloriamos en la esperanza de la gloria de Dios. Y no sólo esto, sino que también nos gloriamos en las tribulaciones, sabiendo que la tribulación produce paciencia; y la paciencia, prueba; y la prueba, esperanza; y la esperanza no avergüenza; porque el amor de Dios ha sido derramado en nuestros corazones por el Espíritu Santo que nos fue dado.” Rom 5:1-5

En la película "Una vida maravillosa" el actor principal atraviesa por una severa crisis financiera y debido a esto comienza a deprimirse, pensando que ha defraudado a su familia desea nunca haber nacido. En ese momento que pronuncia su deseo se le presenta un ángel, el cual lo hace realidad y le muestra cómo estarían sin él las personas que más amaba, enseguida se da cuenta que estarían mucho peor de lo que ya estaban. Esto lo hace darse cuenta de lo importante y útil que era para su familia y amigos, sin contar con el invaluable amor a su alrededor a pesar de las luchas del día a día.

Paradójicamente, la simplicidad del amor es algo muy complicado de entender hoy en día. Pareciera que ahora debemos llenar un formulario para comprobar si cumplimos con algunos requisitos, poniendo nuestra confianza más en la forma como las cosas lucen que en la creencia de que las circunstancias pueden ser transformadas por el simple pero profundo deseo de fijar los ojos en el Señor.

Una vez que reconozcamos la pureza del amor de Dios, su inquebrantable cuidado y su insuperable misericordia, vamos a ver una imagen diferente, más allá de los obstáculos del mundo, una etapa en la que nosotros:

(1) seremos guiados a "restauración" en lugar de "condenación"
(2) entenderemos la "gracia" por encima de la "ley"
(3) manejaremos el "perdón" sin llevar cuenta de las “decepciones"
(4) conquistaremos por "fe" a pesar de las "necesidades"

Aunque parece ser un proceso interminable, nuestros ojos están puestos en la recompensa final, el premio de tener al Señor a nuestro lado, y eso es lo que hace que nuestra vida sea tan maravillosa.

“Puestos los ojos en Jesús, el autor y consumador de la fe, el cual por el gozo puesto delante de él sufrió la cruz, menospreciando el oprobio, y se sentó a la diestra del trono de Dios." Heb 12:2

IT IS A WONDERFUL LIFE...

“Therefore since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God though our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God. Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us”. Rom 5:1-5


In the film "It is a wonderful life" the main actor, due to a financial crisis, gets depressed and feels he has let his family down to the point that he wishes he had never been born. Only when a kind of "angel" makes his wish comes true he realises how important and helpful he was to his family and friends and also how wonderful it was to have so much love around in spite of the struggles of life.

Paradoxically, the simplicity of love is something very complicated to deal with nowadays. It seems like an application form must be filled in to verify some pre-requisites, putting our trust more in the way things appear than in believing that the circumstances can be transformed by the simple but deep desire of setting our eyes on the Lord.

Once we acknowledge the purity of God's love, his unfailing care and unsurpassed mercy, we will see a different picture beyond the obstacles of the world, a stage in which we:

(1) are led to "restoration" instead of "condemnation"
(2) understand "grace" above "law"
(3) deal with "forgiveness" no matter what "disappointments" we have
(4) conquer by "faith" despite "needs"

Although it seems to be an endless process, our eyes are set on the final reward, the prize of having the Lord on our side, and that is what makes our life so wonderful.

“Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith…put your hope in the Lord both now and for evermore."

Heb 12:2; Psalm 131:3

WHAT A FRIEND ! ! !

"Worse than feeling lonely

when you are on your own
is feeling lonely

when you are among people"

Although the Scriptures say "it's not good for man to be alone", sometimes, for different reasons, we are comfortable with being on our own, the problem begins when we start struggling with loneliness in a world whose population has reached more than 6.6 billions.

The truth is that loneliness has nothing to do with the number of people around you, but how many of them, out of your family, you count on at any time, these people are called "friends".

Does friendship depend on each one's values? Is it subjective or can it be objectively defined?

The Bible shows us very clearly what a friend is:

“A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity”. Prov 17:17

“A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother”. Prov 18:24

“Perfume and incense bring joy to the heart, and the pleasantness of one's friend springs from his earnest counsel. Do not forsake your friend and the friend of your father, and do not go to your brother's house when disaster strikes you — better a neighbour nearby than a brother far away”. Prov 27:9-10

Even though we are part of a community, our friends represent a remarkable source of strength and support, people who not only cheer us on when we are doing well, but who wisely rebuke us when the bandages must be taken off to see our mistakes. They are a point of balance helping us through our "ups-and-downs".

Jesus spent a huge amount of time with the crowd but only a few He called his friends, from them three were his closest friends, and out of these three: John "the disciple who the Lord loved". It does not mean Jesus did not love the crowd or the rest of His disciples, it means John was the one who supported him the most, the only one who was courageous enough to risk his own life to be present at the most difficult time in Jesus' life, his crucifixion. John was definitely a friend of friends.

Points to take into consideration:

- Friendship cannot be built in a day nor it is a one-way street: like all kind of relationships it needs to be fed and looked after by those who are involved in it being develop on reciprocal basis. Jesus spent years not only teaching but building their confidence and molding and shaping them.

- Once love gets involved other virtues come along: loyalty, respect, patience, honesty, kindness, self-denial, forgiveness, collaboration, consideration, compassion, among others.

- Friendship should be part of any kind of relationship as a starting point.

- Friends make mistakes: we can indeed be hurt by a friend but in friendship "forgiveness" is a key word too. Jesus was let several times down by his disciples, but He still considered them his friends.

Nowadays the value of friendship seems to have been overcome by daily worries, individualism and busy agendas. Re-write your priorities and leave some space for those special people who would lay down their lives for you. You will surely not regret it.

“Greater love has no-one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends. You are my friends if you do what I command. No longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master's business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you”. Jn 15:13-15

AMIGOS EN TODO TIEMPO....

"Peor que sentirse solo cuando te encuentras a solas es sentirse solo cuando estas rodeado de gente"

Aunque Dios, cuando creó al hombre, dijo "no es bueno para el hombre estar solo", algunas veces, por diferentes razones, nos sentimos bien estando solos, el problema comienza cuando la soledad ya no es mas una opción incluso aunque nos encontremos entre una multitud.

La verdad es que "soledad" no tiene nada que ver con el numero de personas que puedas o no tener a tu alrededor, sino a cuantas de ellas pudieses llamar "amigos".

Ahora bien, qué es un "amigo"? acaso el concepto de "amistad" depende de los valores de cada persona o podríamos definirla objetivamente?

La Palabra de Dios nos muestra muy claramente que significa ser amigo, no tiene nada que ver con edad, clase-social o cultura, mas con solidaridad, amor y tolerancia hacia el prójimo.

“En todo tiempo ama el amigo, y es como un hermano en tiempo de angustia” Prov. 17:17

Ciertamente somos parte de una comunidad, esto hace que, de una forma u otra, nos mantengamos rodeados de gente, pero existe un reducido numero de ellas, fuera de nuestras familias, que representan un soporte sumamente importante, gente que se alegra de nuestra prosperidad pero que también son capaces de criticarnos sabiamente cuando estamos a punto de cometer un error. A esas personas las llamamos AMIGOS. Ellos vienen a ser un punto de apoyo que hace nuestros frecuentes "altos-y-bajos" más llevaderos.

“El ungüento y el perfume alegran el corazón, y el cordial consejo del amigo, al hombre. No dejes a tu amigo, ni al amigo de tu padre; ni vayas a la casa de tu hermano en el día de tu aflicción. Mejor es el vecino cerca que el hermano lejos”.
Prov. 27:9-10

Jesús invirtió mucho tiempo con la multitud pero solo tuvo unos pocos a quienes llamó amigos, de los cuales tres fueros sus amigos mas íntimos y, de estos tres, Juan fue el discípulo al que Jesús mas consideró. Esto no significa que Jesús no amó al resto, pero fue Juan quien demostró su apoyo incondicional hacia Jesús, incluso a riesgo de su propia vida, siendo el único de sus apóstoles presente en su crucifixión. Juan fue definitivamente un amigo de amigos.

“El hombre que tiene amigos ha de mostrarse amigo; y amigo hay más unido que un hermano”. Prov. 18:24

Es importante recordar que:

- No se construye una amistad en un día ni es una vía de un solo sentido: como en todo tipo de relación inter-personal, la amistad necesita ser alimentada y estimulada por todos los involucrados, siendo desarrollada de mutuo acuerdo. Jesús invirtió tiempo en sus discípulos, no solo enseñándoles la Palabra, sino consolidando la confianza y ayudándolos a adaptarse los unos a los otros.

- Una vez que el amor entre amigos se revela este trae consigo otras virtudes, tales como: paciencia, honestidad, comunicación, respeto, gentileza, lealtad, perdón, colaboración, discreción, compasión. (Gal 5:22-23)

- No olvidemos que los “amigos” también cometen errores: podemos ser heridos por nuestros propios amigos puesto que somos todos humanos. Jesús numerosas veces se sintió decepcionado de sus discípulos pero aun así los llamo amigos. (Jn 13:38)

Hoy en día el valor de la amistad parece haber sido sobrepasado por nuestras preocupaciones diarias y apretadas agendas. Revisemos nuestras prioridades a dediquemos un poco mas de tiempo a aquellos bien llamados amigos.

PRUEBA DE FE

“Aconteció después de estas cosas, que probó Dios a Abraham, y le dijo: Abraham. Y él respondió: Heme aquí. Y dijo: Toma ahora tu hijo, tu único, Isaac, a quien amas, y vete a tierra de Moriah, y ofrécelo allí en holocausto sobre uno de los montes que yo te diré. Y Abraham se levantó muy de mañana, y enalbardó su asno, y tomó consigo dos siervos suyos, y a Isaac su hijo; y cortó leña para el holocausto, y se levantó, y fue al lugar que Dios le dijo. Al tercer día alzó Abraham sus ojos, y vio el lugar de lejos. Entonces dijo Abraham a sus siervos: Esperad aquí con el asno, y yo y el muchacho iremos hasta allí y adoraremos, y volveremos a vosotros. Dios fue muy específico cuando hizo referencia a Isaac, le dice toma a "tu hijo", luego le recalca "a tu hijo único", y además " a aquel a quien amas" (Gen 22: 2) Dios sabía que Isaac era la persona más importante en la vida de Abraham. El Señor nos prueba a través de personas y situaciones que realmente nos importan, de lo contrario no sería una prueba.

No hay indicios en la Biblia que Abraham se haya quejado o tenido dudas sobre lo que Dios le había mandado, sin embargo debió haber sido un momento muy difícil el tener que sacrificar la esperanza que Isaac representaba para él, de hecho su única esperanza (Gen 22: 3 - 6).

A veces Dios no revela el "por qué" hasta que el "qué" se lleva a cabo, e incluso el "cómo" es incierto. Una vez que discernimos cual es la voluntad de Dios y obedecemos, su propósito se mostrará a nosotros progresivamente. Caminar por fe es uno de los aspectos más difíciles de nuestra vida cristiana (Gen 22: 7 - 8).

Inmediatamente después de pasar una prueba de fe Dios nos bendice con mucho más de lo que teníamos previamente, y la mejor parte de esto es que nuestros seres queridos y otros alrededor también disfrutarán de esas bendiciones (Gen 22:11-18).

No sabemos cuantas veces Dios nos probará, pero seguramente no será nada que no podamos superar en armonía con Él.

“Hermanos míos, tened por sumo gozo cuando os halléis en diversas pruebas, sabiendo que la prueba de vuestra fe produce paciencia. Mas tenga la paciencia su obra completa, para que seáis perfectos y cabales, sin que os falte cosa alguna” James 1:2-4

TEST OF FAITH

“Some time later God tested Abraham. He said to him, "Abraham!"
"Here I am," he replied. Then God said, "Take your son, your only son, Isaac, whom you love, and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains I will tell you about." …Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and placed it on his son Isaac, and he himself carried the fire and the knife. As the two of them went on together, Isaac spoke up and said to his father Abraham, "Father?" "Yes, my son?" Abraham replied. "The fire and wood are here," Isaac said, "but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?" Abraham answered, "God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son." When they reached the place God had told him about, Abraham built an altar there and arranged the wood on it. He bound his son Isaac and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. Then he reached out his hand and took the knife to slay his son. But the angel of the LORD called out to him from heaven, "Abraham! Abraham!" "Here I am," he replied. "Do not lay a hand on the boy," he said. "Do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son." The angel of the LORD called to Abraham from heaven a second time and said, "I swear by myself, declares the LORD, that because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son, I will surely bless you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will take possession of the cities of their enemies, and through your offspring all nations on earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed me."
Gen 22:1-18

God was very specific when he made reference to Isaac as "your son", "your only son", and moreover "whom you love" (Gen 22:2) God knew that Isaac was the most important person in Abraham's life. The Lord tests us through the people and situations that really matter to us, otherwise it would not be a test.

There are no indications in the Scriptures that Abraham complained or had doubts about what God had commanded him to do, however it must have been a very difficult time sacrificing the hope Isaac represented for him. (Gen 22:3-6)

Sometimes God does not reveal the "why" until the "what" is done and even the "how" is uncertain. Once we discern what God's will is and follow it, its purpose will be progressively brought to light. Walking by faith is one of the most challenging aspects of our Christian lives. (Gen 22:7-8)

Immediately after passing a test of faith God will bless you with much more that you had before, and the best part of it is that your beloved ones and others around you will enjoy it even more abundantly.(Gen 22:11-18)

We do not know how many times God will test us, but surely it will be nothing that we cannot overcome in harmony with Him.

“Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything” James 1:2-4

A CONTRITE HEART...YOU'LL NOT DESPISE...

“The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.”
2Peter 3:9

When everything goes right, I sometimes imagine the Lord being so proud and his happiness makes me stronger in Him. But, what happens when thing do not go so well? What happens when, as Paul said: “For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do”?. I cannot imagine Abraham (The Father of the Faith) lying about his wife to Pharaoh; Solomon (The wisest man on Earth) seduced by the pleasures of the flesh; and Peter (apostle and one of the three Jesus’ closest friends) disowning Him not only one but three times.

As Christians we know the Lord will always forgive us if we come to Him with a repentant and contrite heart and that condemnation does not come from God (John 3:17), however, judgement is a fact which all of us will face sooner or later. God knows the real intentions of our heart, our hidden thoughts and deepest desires. There is a great difference between those who knowing they are doing wrong say “I’ve got time to repent, God will forgive me anyway”, and those whose mistakes lead them to sincere repentance through the Holy Spirit, learning and experiencing a change in their character as so God’s men did.

“Dear friends, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence before God and receive from Him anything we ask, because we obey his commands and do what pleases Him”

1Jn 3:21-22

ESFORZADOS Y VALIENTES

“La mano negligente empobrece; mas la mano de los diligentes enriquece. El que recoge en el verano es hombre entendido; el que duerme en el tiempo de la siega es hijo que avergüenza”. (Prov. 10:4-5)

Esto es parte de la entrevista a Will Smith (el príncipe del Rap) para la revista Selecciones:

- No te cansas de intentar?
- Todavía no. No hay peor dolor que no alcanzar un sueño cuando es tu propia culpa. Una cosa es que Dios no quiera eso para ti, pero si tú no obtienes lo que deseas en tu corazón porque eres un perezoso, no existe dolor peor que ese.

Hay una cosa que nunca escucharemos siendo cristianos: "la vida cristiana es fácil", "no es necesario hacer algo, Dios lo hará absolutamente todo por ti".

Dios siempre está buscando gente esforzada y valiente. Todos hemos sido dotados con ciertos dones y talentos que serán inútiles hasta el momento que decidamos desarrollarlos. Como cristianos, hemos sido llamados a vivir como una familia, en el cuerpo de Cristo todos somos miembros con tareas particulares claves para la consolidación de la Iglesia.

En resumen, es un asunto de "planificar-orar-hacer", en el camino el Señor sin duda manifestará su voluntad abriendo o cerrando puertas, dándonos señales a través de situaciones y personas, pero no esperes a que Dios lo haga todo, es un trabajo en equipo.

"Y todo lo que hagáis, hacedlo de corazón, como para el Señor y no para los hombres; sabiendo que del Señor recibiréis la recompensa de la herencia, porque a Cristo el Señor servís" Col 3: 23-24

HARD WORKERS

Lazy hands make a man poor, but diligent hands bring wealth. He who gathers crops in summer is a wise son, but he who sleeps during harvest is a disgraceful son.
Prov 10:4-5

This is part of Will Smith's interview in Reader's Digest magazine:
- Do you get tired of pushing?
- Not yet. There is no pain worse than not achieving a dream when it's your own fault. If God did not want you to have it, that is one thing. But if you do not get what you desire because you are lazy, there is no pain worse than that.

There is one thing that we will never hear as Christians: "Christian life is easy", "You do not need to do anything, God will do it for you".

God is always looking for workers. We have all been endowed with certain gifts and talents which are helpless until we decide to develop them. As Christians we have been called to live as a family, purposeless if we do not make any effort to bear each other and becoming Christ-like; as the Body of Christ we are all members with a particular and very important task to build the church, useless if we do not do it on solid ground.

Summing up, it is a “planning-praying-doing matter”, on the way the Lord will undoubtedly manifest his will opening and closing doors, giving us signs through situations and people, but do not expect God to do everything, it is a teamwork.

“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving”. Col 3:23-24

"FRIENDLY FIRE": Euphemism of war or everyday truth

“If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose. Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others. Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus”. Phil 2:1-5


Reading the newspapers and following the news on Iraq and Afghanistan, there is certain military terminology that has caught my attention, such as "friendly fire" and "collateral damage", and I wonder how could "fire" possibly be "friendly"?. Then I found out that the Army started using this term during the Vietnam War to name those mistakes which have harmed innocent people and residential areas in a more acceptable way giving them less importance. Nowadays, this term is widely used throughout the world.

How many times do we try to justify a lie colouring it as "white"? How much could we harm someone and then justify it saying "Sorry, I thought you were somebody else" or "Sorry, you were in my way so I had no choice" and walk away as nothing has happened.

Fortunately, we are far from seeing this kind of behaviour in the Body of Christ, each and every member is considered as an unique part of the whole according to the grace that has been given by our Father in heaven through his only Son and Spirit.

We are certainly human beings who make mistakes more often than we would like to, however, we have been called to name "good" what is good and "evil" what is evil. Making mistakes is only a door that can lead us to two different paths, our freewill allows us to choose the one we feel more comfortable to walk upon.

“Finally, all of you, live in harmony with one another; be sympathetic, love as brothers, be compassionate and humble. Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult, but with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing”.
1Peter 3:8-9

WHY ME, LORD???

And Job said: "Naked I came from my mother's womb, and naked I shall depart. The LORD gave and the LORD has taken away; may the name of the LORD be praised." In all this, Job did not sin by charging God with wrongdoing. His wife said to him, "Are you still holding on to your integrity? Curse God and die!" He replied, "You are talking like a foolish woman. Shall we accept good from God, and not trouble?" In all this, Job did not sin in what he said.
Job 1:21-22; 2:9

As peace and joyfulness are part of our everyday life so are difficult times and challenges. What really matters is not "what" but "how" we deal with them.

I remember that for a long time I kept on asking God why my dad had to go through painful lung cancer treatment, why he had to passed away one day before going back home to Venezuela from his holidays in Italy, at that time I felt my last chance of seeing him alive was abruptly taken away from me.
Nevertheless, seven years later, two friends of mine were going through the same situation with their parents and I had the opportunity of supporting and encouraging them because of how God has been ministering me through these years, I was able to say "I know what it feels like, you are not alone" due to I knew exactly how devastating it can be when there is no one who you can identify yourself with at those times. In other words, I could relate to their needs and help them. This experience has endowed me with a particular sensibility to intercede, comfort and encourage people in similar situations.

I cannot say "I know what you feel" to someone who is going through a divorce because I have not been married yet and my parents remained together until my dad passed away. That is why we are a body with different members and backgrounds, do not miss any chance of using your experiences to give a hand to somebody. We have been called not only to seek the presence of the Lord but to help others to find the way and keep on going, especially when it requires extra effort.

At the end of the tunnel you will surely be enlightened with:

1) Spiritual growth: do we really believe that in everything God works for the good of those who love Him? Then, this will be the perfect time to show and strengthen our faith.
(James 1:2-4; Rom 8:28)

2) Testimony: overcoming adversity according to the Scriptures will make us sympathize with those who are dealing with similar circumstances. The way we handle our personal struggles affects not only us but people around. (Acts 16:24-25; Phi 1:13-14)

it doesn't matter while I don't get lost.

For sure I'm on my way,
this mountain is the highest I've ever seen
and it's looking at me with defiant eyes and a tricky smile
but there is someone behind me
I feel his hands placed on my back
"Go on, you can do it" he says, holding me safely
I turn around and look at his unmistakable nail marks
and that gives me the courage to command myself
"Climb to the top...it is worthwhile"

TESTIMONY

He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, "He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust". "Because he loves me" says the Lord, " I will rescue him; I will protect him for he acknowledges my name". He will call upon me, and I will answer him. I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honour him. With long life I will satisfy him and show him my salvation". PSalm 91

COULD I MINISTER TO ANOTHER PERSON WITHOUT EVEN REALIZING I'M

DOING IT?

Indeed, you can. Don't underestimate what you can do for the Kingdom of God, a simple comment from you could be a great encouragement for somebody else, a sincere smile could change another person's dismal outlook.

About two months ago I read the testimony of a Christian man who mentioned Psalm 91:1-2, I remember that I was extremely sad and disappointed with a few things that had been happening, feeling curious I took my Bible and read the whole of Psalm 91. Suddenly, what seemed to be the darkest day of the year became the brightest moment in the presence of the Lord. Those words were the answer to my prayers that day, and I thank God for that unknown man who indirectly encouraged me to read that specific Psalm full of promises.

A centurion believed that only one word from Jesus could heal his servant and he was right. Moreover, the Lord said that anyone who has faith in Him will do greater things.

So, do not miss any opportunity to testify of your faith, whatever you say, do or write could touch someone's life, anonymously or not; today or in a few years time, it will produce its fruits because the Word of God does not return to Him empty.

Water a seed and God will surely make it grow.

Estoy crucificado juntamente con Jesús, pero... a la derecha o a la izquierda?

“Y uno de los malhechores que estaban colgados le injuriaba, diciendo: Si tú eres el Cristo, sálvate a ti mismo y a nosotros. Respondiendo el otro, le reprendió, diciendo: ¿Ni aun temes tú a Dios, estando en la misma condenación? Nosotros, a la verdad, justamente padecemos, porque recibimos lo que merecieron nuestros hechos; mas éste ningún mal hizo. Y dijo a Jesús: Acuérdate de mí cuando vengas en tu reino. Entonces Jesús le dijo: De cierto te digo que hoy estarás conmigo en el paraíso." Luke 23:39-43

No existe mucha información o evidencias acerca de los criminales crucificados con Jesús, solo una pocas hipótesis afirman que fueron parte de la banda de Barrabas, capturados y condenados al mismo tiempo y por los mismos delitos, siendo Barrabas el más conocido y peligroso. Es muy probable que estos dos hombres hayan tenido muchas cosas en común, tales como: infancia, clase social, estilo de vida, resentimientos en contra de la sociedad, tendencias políticas y religiosas, entre otras cosas.

Entonces, como pudo ser posible que estos dos hombres pudiesen reaccionar de una manera tan diferente?. Enfrentando el momento más crítico de sus vidas, envueltos en la desesperanza representada en una muerte tan cruel, en donde nadie parecía ser capaz de ayudar. Pero en medio de toda esa oscuridad uno de ellos percibió algo diferente, algo que lo hizo ver al Señor juntamente crucificado con él y creer fielmente que El era su única salida a la restauración y salvación.

Dos de los más notorios hombres del Antiguo Testamento, José y Job, alcanzaron a desarrollar una relación más cercana con Dios a través de largos periodos de sufrimiento, siendo luego recompensados por su fe.

Toma algunos minutos para meditar sobre una situación en tu vida que haya sido difícil y dolorosa. Como reaccionaste? Percibiste la presencia del Señor no solamente como mediador sino sufriendo el mismo dolor a tu lado? Oraste como aquel hombre que humildemente reconoció el poder de Dios en Jesús o solo preguntaste: "Donde estás, Señor? Si eres tan poderoso entonces por qué permites que esto pase?”.

Lo que sea que hayas hecho en el pasado no dejes que afecte tu futuro pero úsalo como parte de tu aprendizaje diario, ahora mismo Cristo te da la oportunidad de escoger como manejar esos momentos creciendo en fe y dando testimonio de la obra de Dios en tu vida.
En la vida cristiana, la fe es común denominador que nos da la perspectiva correcta, pero recordemos que fe y obras trabajan juntas.

I've been crucified with Christ, but... on the left or right hand side?

“One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: "Aren't you the Christ? Save yourself and us!". But the other criminal rebuked him. "Don't you fear God," he said, "since you are under the same sentence? We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong." Then he said, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom." Jesus answered him, "I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise." Luke 23:39-43

Who were the criminals crucified with Jesus? Some think they were part of Barabbas' gang, captured and condemned at the same time, others believe that their political tendencies drove them into crucifixion. But apart from that, it seems quite probable that these two men had had many things in common, such as childhood, life-style, resentments against the society, among others. Then, how was it possible that they could react in such a different way at that time?

They were facing an unavoidable moment full of cruelty and despair where no-one seemed to be able to help, however, one of them perceived something different that made him see the Lord jointly crucified with him and faithfully believe that He was the only way to restoration and salvation.

Reflect for a moment on a painful situation in your life and how you went through it. Did you realize that the Lord was always by your side? or you just asked: "Where are you, "powerful God"? doubting and challenging Him instead. I tell you, whatever you did in the past do not let it affect your future, right now the Lord is giving you the great opportunity to handle those times according to his Word, and moreover, to encourage others by your testimony.

Two of the most remarkable men in the Old Testament, Joseph and Job, developed a closer relationship with God after going through a long period of pain and anguish, reaching the end of their lives with much more wisdom and faith than ever.

Martin Luther King Jr. said: “Faith is not a matter of "WHY's" but "WHAT's".
Then I encourage you to transform your WHY’s?:(why is this happening to me?; Why does God do nothing about?), into WHAT’s: What do I need to learn from this experience? What is God trying to tell me? What should I do as a committed Christian?

The right perspective is given by faith as a common denominator, but remember that faith and deeds go together.
